Pfizer is a leading international biopharmaceutical company founded in New York City in 1849.

Pfizer was named after German-Americans Charles Faiser (Carl Pfitzer) and Charles Erhardt (from Ludwigsburg, Germany), who founded the pharmaceutical business in a building at Harrison Avenue and Bartlet Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 1849. They produced a remedy against parasites, which was called «santonin». Their products immediately began to enjoy success. The company’s rapid growth began in 1880 when they began producing citric acid. The company continued to buy property in order to expand its laboratory and factory in a neighborhood bounded by Bartlet Street, Harrison Avenue, Guerry Street and Flushing Avenue. These rooms are still used as utility workshops. Pfizer established its administrative headquarters at 81 Maiden Lane in Manhattan.

By 1910 (by this time sales reached $3 million), Pfizer was considered an expert in fermentation technology. This knowledge was used for the mass production of penicillin during World War II, at the request of the US government. This antibiotic was very much needed by wounded soldiers of allied troops, soon it began to be called «life-giving medicine». Most of the penicillin received by the Allied forces at the Normandy landing was transferred to Pfizer.

By 1950, the company was present in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Iran, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Turkey and the United Kingdom. In the 1980s and 1990s, the company experienced a period of intense growth, which was associated with the invention and sale of new popular medicines.

In 2000, Pfizer merged with Warner-Lambert to acquire the rights to the drug Lipitor (Atovastatin), which had previously been sold to Warner-Lambert and Pfizer. Warner-Lambert was based in Morris Plains, New Jersey, and is now a major base of Pfizer operations. Most of Pfizer’s manufacturing facilities, as well as the OTC (Consumer Healthcare, 2005 revenue of $3.87 billion) were sold to Johnson & Johnson in June 2006 for $16.6 billion. The transaction included brands such as Listerine, Visine, Neosporin, Zantac and Nicorette.
